Cockroaches

What are cockroaches?

Cockroaches, also called roaches, are a part of the Blattodea order. Around 4,600 species exist around the world. Most have flat, oval-shaped bodies with long, thin antennae and six legs covered in sticky spines. Their three life stages include egg, nymph, and adult. Many adults have wings but don't fly much, and nymphs are tinier and wingless.

Generally, these pests are nocturnal and could have sensitivities to light. Thus, seeing them during the day suggests an infestation. Other noticeable signs of a cockroach infestation include musty odors from their communication chemicals and secretions, discovering their exoskeletons, and finding their droppings or eggs. Their excrement can be rounded or grainy. Eggs are brown, red, black, or tan, and one inch long or less. Some prefer outdoor settings and organic matter, while others favor interiors. The three dominant species in San Mateo are German, American, and Oriental cockroaches.

Are cockroaches dangerous?

Cockroaches are dangerous because harmful microbes are on their skin. In addition, bacteria lie in their urine, feces, and saliva. Since these bugs gravitate to unsanitary places, like sewers and dumpsters, germs can attach to their leg spines. Cockroaches can bring all of these microorganisms into your home or business. The likelihood of food and surface contamination is high. You may come in contact with a virus or pathogen, leaving you with salmonella or gastroenteritis. Their carcasses and dead skins can worsen problems with asthma and allergies. Regarding property damage, some species can destroy paper and fabrics.

Why do I have a cockroach problem?

Cockroaches enjoy the food, water, and shelter provided by human dwellings. Domiciles and establishments that are older or have some level of deterioration will be most susceptible to invasions. These insects can get through small cracks and crevices, and they multiply pretty quickly. You're also bound to have cockroach issues if the land surrounding your property is unkempt.

Where will I find cockroaches?

German cockroach adults are about half an inch long and tan or brown. The young are little and black, but both have dark horizontal stripes running along their heads. This species often infiltrates homes and businesses where they like to hide in bags, boxes, and furniture. Dark spaces with moisture or humidity are attractive to them as well.

American cockroaches grow to three inches long or more. They're reddish-brown or mahogany color, and they too like interiors, dampness, and warmth. They'll gather near trees, gardens, mulch, flowerbeds, and gutters in a natural environment. If they're around your house, they'll be in kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms.

Oriental cockroaches are around an inch long and compact. Their reddish-brown or black bodies are glossy, and while they have wings, they aren't functional. You'll come across them by appliances, sinks, gutters, storm drains, and other water utilities. Considering their lack of mobility, they're normally on the floor.

How do I get rid of cockroaches?

"Do it yourself" remedies and retail products for cockroaches fail because they aren't intended for long-term use or to exterminate infestations. They'll only kill a handful of bugs if that. Further, they can be costly and hazardous. We at Pacific Pest Management have affordable interior and exterior solutions. Our industrial-grade home cockroach control treatments are also safe and executed by experienced technicians. Call us today for assistance!

How can I prevent cockroaches in the future?

Cockroaches can easily infiltrate properties and reproduce in large numbers. It's best to maintain preventative measures:

  • Close holes in foundations and utilities.
  • Fix leaks and moisture malfunctions immediately.
  • Make sure screens and sweeps are intact.
  • Trim grass and greenery frequently.
  • Sit plants away from the property.
  • Use secure containers for food and trash storage.
  • Remove garbage regularly.
  • Clean the kitchen with detail on a routine basis.
  • Vacuum rugs often.
